Reston, VA. – (May 20, 2011) - The Joyce-Gillespie-Harrington Educational and Charitable Foundation, Inc. (JGH) of Zeta Upsilon Lambda Chapter, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and George Mason University Foundation, Inc., and the George Mason University African and African American Studies Program have joined forces to establish the Paul Robeson Saturday Academy. The Saturday Academy is a rigorous academic, social enrichment and self-empowering program for high school students. It is comprised of 6-week sessions in the Fall, Spring and Summer months from 9am to 2pm focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), Robotics, Mentoring, and Cultural and Diversity Sensitivity. Reading, writing, research, critical thinking, and study skills are also emphasized. Students and families also receive guidance in the social and emotional issues related to excelling in advanced placement courses and matriculating into college.
 
The Saturday Academy seeks to identify a diverse group of current ninth through twelfth grade girls and boys living within the Greater Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area who are academically talented, exhibit high character and leadership potential. Student applicants must be from families who are supportive of their child’s educational success. Scholarships will be available for students who show economic need, based upon family income.
