<p>African and African American Studies outreach program aims at directly impacting the Northern Virginia community and the greater Washington D. C. area. Through partnerships with community organizations, businesses, and k-12 institutions AAAS seeks to make a lasting contribution to the dynamic and diverse Northern Virginia community. The program organizes campus visits and cultural programs for high school students, parents, K-12 staff and community members. All visiting groups receive a tour of the GMU Fairfax campus, participate in a lecture, and meet AAAS faculty and staff. AAAS collaborates with alumni, Black sororities and fraternities, and student groups in organizing its student recruitment events.</p> <p>Other outreach activities of the programs include providing group tours and mentoring workshops for the &ldquo;Men on a Mission&rdquo; program. A unique program, &ldquo;Men on a Mission&rdquo; targets black males at the Dominion High School, located in Sterling, Virginia. The program has led to a 50 percent drop in the failure rate for that student group over the last two years. <br /><br />African and African American Studies also provides lectures/workshops for the Saturday Leadership Academy (SLA). The Saturday Leadership Academy is a group based mentoring program for African American males in grades 8-12 that meets every other Saturday.
