Mason Student Reed Awarded Fall Internship with New Smithsonian Museum for African American History and Culture
Mason student, Ayana Reed, was awarded the Musical Crossroads Curatorial Intern for the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), and is working with the Smithsonian this fall.  At Mason, she is majoring in Music with a concentration in Vocal Performance, and minoring in African and African American Studies. The duration of the internship is from September until December.

Her daily duties are to assist the Music and Performing Arts and Musical Crossroads exhibition team in developing one of the museum's permanent exhibitions. In this role, she surveys and researches external collections for potential acquisition, then sorts what's acquired at the NMAAHC storage facility in Landover, Maryland. Once she completes this stage, her task is to draft justifications for review by the Collections Committee. Besides researching external collections, Reed conducts research on specific objects and background history on selected artists and themes related to exhibitions. Also, she attends collections and exhibit-related meetings with curators, educators, exhibit designers, and other museum staff.
