The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is proud to honor Xanthia Bianca Johnson, BA Biology '99; African and African American Studies Minor, with the 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award in African and African American Studies. Johnson is the founder and chief executive officer of Urban Playology, LLC, a private practice in Washington, D.C., where she revolutionized the provision of psychotherapy and integrative healing for communities of color and the LGBTIQA+ community.

As principal investigator, Chrystal George Mwangi, associate professor of higher education, will lead a three-year project to advance collaborations for equity in marine and climate science.

The best-selling author of Reading Lolita in Tehran will discuss freedom of expression, the true purpose of education, and reading dangerously.

When answering a question about how to handle the pressure of solving societal issues that will not be resolved in an activist’s lifetime, Dr. Ntaiya answered with a quote that sums up her impact on the world, “I have started something that will not stop.”

Brian P. Jones' book, “The Tuskegee Student Uprising: A History,” was the focus of his talk as George Mason University’s 2023 W.E.B. Du Bois Lecture Series guest speaker hosted by the African and African American Studies Program.

The Center for Humanities Research is now accepting applications for Summer 2023 faculty research grants. Grants of up to $3,000 are available to support humanities-related research. Applications due April 3.
