Section Information for Fall 2021

This synchronous online course coincides with the 20th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York City, Washington, DC, and the nation as a whole. The course will address the event itself, from local, national, and international perspectives, as well as its historical antecedents, aftermaths, and legacies, including the history of 9/11 commemorations and the attacks' representation in popular culture. Topics addressed will include US foreign relations in the Middle East, the Persian Gulf War, previous terrorist attacks, the Patriot Act and other security initiatives, the Global War on Terror, anti-Muslim and anti-Arab sentiment in the US, the 9/11 settlement fund, 9/11 conspiracies and hoaxes, material culture related to 9/11, collective remembrance, collective trauma, and the commemoration of national tragedy. The course will combine readings, lecture, films, discussions, and (pending scheduling considerations) guest speakers. Skills developed in the course include formal and informal writing, textual analysis, public speaking, and critical thinking about both historical and current events. This course will meet synchronously online, meaning students are expected to attend class at the appointed time.
