African American Studies is an interdisciplinary field of study that centers the Black experience in intellectual thought and social engagement. This course is an introduction to developing critical thinking skills and fostering intellectual curiosity about the ways in which Black people in the United States and globally have used knowledge, community, resistance, and protest to maintain their human dignity, cultural and social values. Through lectures, readings, discussions, guest appearances by AAAS program faculty, and community engagement, this class will introduce you to the major intellectual, cultural, and historical debates in African American Studies.

Interdisciplinary introduction to the field of African American studies. Includes comparative analysis of approaches, methodologies, and key concepts related to the study of people of African descent in the United States, continental Africa, and throughout the African diaspora. Lectures and discussion integrate attention to such issues as diversity and multiculturalism from national and global perspectives. Limited to three attempts.
