2024 Distinguished Alumni - African and African American Studies
Rashid Shabazz, BA English '98, African and African American Studies Minor, is a visionary philanthropic and cultural leader, communications strategist, and advocate. He is executive director of Critical Minded, a grantmaking and advocacy initiative founded by the Ford Foundation and Nathan Cummings Foundation to invest in critics of color and strengthen the field of cultural criticism in the United States.
2018 Distinguished Alumni - African and African American Studies
Committed to equity in education she has served as both a Curriculum Specialist and Diversity, Equity and Inclusiveness Facilitator for Teach For America Summer Institute, supporting the development of first year teachers during their summer institute. Committed to community she was a founding member of DC Education Coalition for Change, a community organizing group made up of families, students, educators and friends of education that organizes around the needs of students in the District.

Sarah Nawab graduated from George Mason University in winter 2016 and proceeded to attend Northeastern University School of Law (NUSL) to pursue her Juris Doctor. While attending NUSL, she undertook internships in the areas of civil rights, criminal defense, and prisoners' rights.

Erica is from Newport News, Virginia and a 2011 graduate of George Mason University. She received her Bachelor of Arts Humanities and Social Sciences degree in Journalism and minor in African and African American Studies.

Xanthia Johnson, BA Biology '99; African and African Studies Minor, is the founder and chief executive officer of Urban Playology, LLC, a private practice in Washington, D.C., where she revolutionized the provision of psychotherapy and integrative healing for communities of color and the LGBTIQA+ community.
